Been actually reading a couple of webcomics outside my usual haunts, both of which are bit outside the usual venue of either Slice of Life or Sci-Fi/Fantasy.
First off is The Last Mechanical Monster, an Eisner nominated strip written and drawn by Brian Fies, creator of "Mom's Cancer" and "Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow." The premise is simple: The unnamed, tuxedo wearing villain of the classic Fleischer Studios Superman cartoon "The Mechanical Monsters" is finally out of prison after serving a 72 year sentence for creating an army of flying robots to... rob jewelry stores.
It's 2013, he's 99 years old, and most of his robots are still sitting in a ball of metal in his old lair, but he's got just enough parts to recreate one more...
Assuming he can purchase antique vacuum tubes on store credit.
This is a fascinating comic, riffing off a classic cartoon, which fortunately is in the public domain. It's low on action (especially given that "Sparky" is too old for gymanstics these days) but it's a well written character piece that I've been enjoying, and builds on the Sensawunder that old sci-fi and comic books could bring.
The second comic I've been reading is the recently concluded Alone Together, written and drawn by Steven Gallacci, most widely known for his classic sci-fi comic Erma Felna EDF. This time around the story revolves around two soldiers, Cadet Danni, a first year Imperial Army officer cadet, and Sgt. Jerom, a veteran Flight Sergeant from the opposing side. Danni finds herself trapped on a desert island when her training unit is attacked and retreats hastily, leaving her behind, presumed dead.
A year later during an extended ceasefire, Jerom lands his plane on the island after experiencing mechanical trouble, and finds Danni much the worse for wear psychologically for her long isolation. Together the young cadet and the grizzled sergeant, not knowing each other's language, must find common ground and survive against threats on the island and from outside. Because the cease fire is on shaky ground and Danni's empire may be about to undergo a revolution...
Gallacci is a pilot and a Vietnam veteran, and uses his experience to provide a realistic portrait of two soldiers with vastly different life experiences trying to find common ground and peace in their lives.
The fact that one is a female rabbit and the other a sawed off mouse is pretty much secondary...
Both Highly Recommended.

Okay, that's weird.
So after posting Part 21 of Minerva's journey into the Furry Amsterdam BDSM world, I've gotten a whopping eight favorites in the past twenty-four hours, when the more usually fave rate is maybe 3 or 4 in a week (and two of those guaranteed from Vikki Rubbervixen slotting each part into two different folders). Which I have no explanation for except maybe adding a tag for "Prison", or possibly "Prison" and "German" made it pop up on multiple users Try This prompts on their front pages.

Character Concept: The Disaster Lesbians
So this is a concept that start percolating in my head while listening to Cage the Elephant's "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked" on endless repeat, which somehow mutated into the background music for a furry sci-fi Western bank heist ala Trigun/Firefly. Basic Concept: Three lesbian furries Do Crimes (or occasionally bounty hunting) leaving wreckage in their wake ala Dirty Pair. I don't have names for them yet but they fit pretty neatly into the usual Heist Story stereotypes. The Muscle: Species - Wazagan (because of course). 7 1/2 feet of kick-ass of blue hair and attitude, usually punching someone or firing a BFG, or possibly both at the same time. Considers bar brawls a recreational sport. The Brains/The Sniper: Species - Black Leopard. Usually dressed in a tweed Western style pantsuit, rounded wireframe sunglasses, likely with a cigarillo hanging out of her mouth. The planner of the group. She normally hangs back during a heist, picking off the opposition with a sniper rifle from a
Sometimes I Wonder About People
So yesterday someone PM'ed me, asking if I wanted to help them write an 8k NSFW Pokemon for a commission. Some relevant points: 1. I don't know jack about Pokemon nor do I have any Pokemon related stories in my gallery or my faves. 2. I don't write stories on commission, nor do I advertise that I do. 3. I have no idea who the person is, and our only relation is that we follow a couple of the same artists. 4. The specific mention "I haven't been paid yet for this" wasn't exactly inspiring. The weird thing is I'd have dismissed it straightaway as a scam, but it was a Core account with stuff actually in their own gallery. I just have no idea why they'd contact me randomly out of the blue like that.

Yeah, Alone Together is certainly one I hope gets the full treatment someday (inks, etc.).
